How to Extend a Super Visa Stay Inside Canada

The date stamped at entry is what counts. Here's how to apply for an extension in time, and how to keep the insurance in step.

Quick answer

To stay longer than the date set at entry, a Super Visa holder applies online for a visitor record (an extension of stay) from inside Canada, before their current status expires. If they apply in time, they can stay while IRCC decides. Their medical insurance must also be renewed so it covers the whole extended stay.

How long can a Super Visa holder stay?

IRCC says Super Visa holders can stay 5 years at a time, with multiple entries over up to 10 years. The exact date is set by the border officer when your parent arrives, so check the stamp in their passport or the visitor record they were given. That date, not the visa's expiry, is what matters.

When to apply for an extension

  • Apply online before the "stay until" date. Many advisors recommend at least 30 days ahead.
  • If the application is in before status expires, your parent keeps their status while IRCC decides (sometimes called maintained status).
  • Leaving Canada while the extension is pending usually ends it. Plan travel carefully.
  • A visitor record is not a visa. To re-enter Canada later, your parent needs a valid Super Visa or visitor visa.

Documents usually needed

  • The online application to extend a stay as a visitor
  • Passport and current immigration document
  • Proof the host still meets the income requirement (see 2026 rules)
  • An updated letter from the host
  • Proof of medical insurance covering the new dates

The insurance step people miss

IRCC expects Super Visa holders to keep valid health insurance for their whole stay, and to renew it if it runs out before they leave. The timing matters for the policy as much as for the visa:

  • Renew before the current policy ends. A gap usually means a new waiting period and new medical questions.
  • Expect a new price. Renewals are priced on your parent's age and health at renewal.
  • A condition that started during the last policy may count as pre-existing on the new one. Ask before you switch insurers.

Common questions

Can Super Visa parents stay more than 5 years?

Each entry allows up to 5 years. They can apply from inside Canada for a visitor record to extend their stay, before their current status expires.

What happens if my parent's status expires before the extension is decided?

If they applied before the expiry date, they can generally stay while IRCC decides. If they applied late, they'd need to look at restoring status, so speak to a licensed immigration professional.

Do I need new insurance for an extension?

Yes. The insurance must cover the extended period. Renew before the current policy ends to avoid a gap.

Is a visitor record the same as a visa?

No. A visitor record extends the stay inside Canada; it doesn't let your parent re-enter Canada after leaving.
