What does a Super Visa insurance plan cover?
Quick answer
IRCC requires at least $100,000 of emergency medical coverage, valid for at least one year from entry, covering health care, hospitalization and repatriation, from a Canadian insurer or an OSFI-authorized foreign insurer. It can be paid in full or in monthly instalments with a deposit.
- Emergency hospital stays
- Doctor and walk-in clinic visits
- Lab tests, X-rays and diagnostics
- Prescription drugs (emergency)
- Ground and air ambulance
- Emergency dental for accidents and pain relief
- Return of remains (repatriation)
- Side trips outside Canada (plan-dependent)
- 24/7 multilingual assistance line
- Stable pre-existing conditions (optional)
Benefits, limits and stability rules vary by plan and age. The policy wording always decides what's paid — Pankaj walks you through it before you buy.
Good to know: the two choices that move the price most are the deductible and whether you include pre-existing conditions. Our Super Visa insurance cost guide shows how each choice changes what you pay.

Frequently asked questions
What is emergency medical insurance for visitors to Canada?
It's private insurance that pays for unexpected medical care while someone is in Canada without provincial health coverage — hospital stays, doctor visits, tests, prescriptions and ambulance. Provincial plans like OHIP don't cover visitors, and one night in a Canadian hospital can cost several thousand dollars.
Is Super Visa insurance mandatory?
Yes. IRCC requires proof of private medical insurance with at least $100,000 of emergency coverage, valid for at least one year from the date of entry, covering health care, hospitalization and repatriation. It must come from a Canadian insurer or an OSFI-authorized foreign insurer. See the full Super Visa insurance requirements.
How fast can I get a quote?
Instantly. Enter the traveller's age, coverage amount and dates in the quote tool and you'll see prices from several insurers side by side. Most families have their policy and visa confirmation letter the same day.
Can my parents get coverage for pre-existing conditions?
Often, yes — if the condition has been stable for the period the plan requires, usually 90, 180 or 365 days depending on the insurer and age. Plans with pre-existing cover cost more, so it's worth getting the medical questions right. Read how stability periods work.
What happens if the visa is refused?
Most insurers refund the full premium when you send the refusal letter before the policy starts. If your parents come home early, you can usually get a partial refund for unused months as long as there were no claims, less an admin fee. Details in our refund guide.
Do you charge a fee for advice?
No. You pay the insurer's premium — the same price as buying direct. Pankaj is paid by the insurer, so the advice, comparison and claim help cost you nothing extra.
