Quick answer
A 2026 Super Visa application needs: proof the host meets the minimum income (now with two ways to qualify), a signed letter of invitation, proof of relationship, Super Visa medical insurance ($100,000+, valid 1 year from entry), an immigration medical exam, and biometrics. Your parent applies from outside Canada, and government fees start from $100.
Step-by-step checklist
Check the host's income
Count your family size and compare with IRCC's table, using the 2026 two-year or 75% options if needed.
Write the letter of invitation
Include a signed promise of financial support, the list and number of people in your household, and a copy of your citizenship or PR document.
Gather relationship proof
Birth certificates or other documents showing the parent–child or grandparent–grandchild relationship.
Buy Super Visa insurance
$100,000+ emergency coverage for health care, hospitalization and repatriation, valid at least 1 year from entry, from a Canadian or OSFI-authorized insurer.
Complete the medical exam
Your parent does an immigration medical exam with an IRCC panel physician, following IRCC's instructions.
Apply online and give biometrics
Submit from outside Canada, pay the fees and give fingerprints and a photo if asked.
Travel with proof
Carry the visa, insurance confirmation and invitation letter at every entry.
The host's documents
- CRA Notice of Assessment for the qualifying tax year (Option 1), or the documents allowed under Option 2: T4/T1, pay stubs, an employer letter, bank or pension statements
- Proof of Canadian citizenship, PR status or registered Indian status
- The letter of invitation, co-signed by your spouse if you're combining income
Not sure you meet the income test? Read the 2026 income requirement guide.
The parent's documents
- Valid passport
- Proof of relationship to the host
- Insurance confirmation naming the insurer, coverage amount and dates
- Medical exam completed as instructed
- Proof of ties home: property, family, pension, past travel
- If using Option 2: proof of their own continuing income
Insurance: get it right the first time
Insurance problems are one of the most common avoidable reasons for Super Visa refusals. Make sure the policy:
- Starts on the planned arrival date
- Covers at least 365 days from entry
- Shows $100,000 or more per person
- Names the insurer (underwriter)
- Shows paid in full, or a deposit plus instalments
Most insurers refund the premium if the visa is refused, so buying before you apply is low-risk. Compare quotes and you'll have the confirmation letter the same day.
