Quick answer

New permanent residents and returning Canadians may have no provincial health coverage for their first days or months. Ontario has removed its three-month OHIP waiting period, but coverage starts only once you apply in person and are approved. British Columbia still has a waiting period (the rest of the arrival month plus two months). A short private policy covers the gap.

Province by province (where we're licensed)

ProvinceWhat to expect
OntarioNo OHIP waiting period for eligible residents, but you must apply in person at ServiceOntario and be approved
British ColumbiaMSP waiting period: the rest of the month you arrive plus two months
Alberta, Manitoba, SaskatchewanRegister on arrival; check current processing times
New Brunswick, Nova ScotiaCheck the provincial health ministry for current rules

Provincial rules change. Confirm with your province's health ministry before you travel.

Returning Canadians

If you've lived abroad and lost provincial coverage, you may need to re-apply on return. Even without a formal waiting period, the paperwork takes time. A visitor-style policy covers emergencies until your card is active.

Moving between provinces

Your old province generally keeps covering you for a short time while you register in the new one, but it may not pay everything at the new province's rates. If you're unsure, a short policy is inexpensive peace of mind.

What to buy

A visitors to Canada plan for the exact number of days you need, starting on your arrival date. If your provincial coverage starts sooner than expected, many insurers refund unused days.
